So this isn't set for release until the end of the month, and the promotional copy I was given yesterday contains no information about this folk/rock sing-songwriter what-so-ever. For what the internet tells me, this album is written as a double ode to his dead father (AIDS) and his dead mother (9/11). Wow, what cinematic, double tradgedies!
Internet people are really blowing their loads over this one. I agree that there are great moments, mostly in the opening track, "While You Were Sleeping" that slowly constructs itself instrument by instrument (guitar, bass, drums, drunken brass section) over the course of it's 6 minute running time. "May Day!" is kind of fun with its lurching swaying chorus. But the rest of the album is tougher sledding. Too many of the tracks feel like they are suppose to be competent place holders, there to seperate a couple really important songs. Then the great songs don't come and you are just left with the placeholders. "Moon Woman II" shares 90% of its DNA with "Out On the Weekend," without being half as affecting. The title track is so over the top (in its quiet, calculated manner) that it makes me angry at Hamlet for popularizing moaning about dead parents.
I don't know, anyone else listen to it? Am I just not getting it? |
