Re: Texas Chainsaw Massacre... it's a faithful remake. That means that it doesn't have a smiley to leaven the violence, so it's a little grueling... overly, unrelentingly dark. I personally prefer a little more humor or irony in my nonstop gorefests. But it's got Jessica Biel in it it a tied-off sweaty t-shirt, so there's that angle, too.

In a word, it's snuffy.

Actually I saw Dawn of the Dead a while back too and really enjoyed it. The Ring was also fantastic. The Ring had a solid script and solid film-making. No MTV moments and very subtle, it also provided a slight pay-off of gore or other horrible visuals. Ring is a perfect example of my point that if you're not going to show gore you need a solid story and competent actors. Dawn of the Dead was great because it had a good gore payload and still kept Romero's original vision and analog to consumer society. I enjoyed the TCM remake too - Great gore and again, competent acting. I've never seen the original but over the weekend watching Boogeymen 2 and Bravo's 100 Best horror moments showed clips - It appears to be really faithful to the original, even in the framing of the boyfriend entering the house to find the missing girl as well as leatherface slamming that metal door shut. Great stuff.
