I think she developed this Poor Me I Can't Do Anything routine because she was incredibly lazy and did not want to deal with problems as they were happening, so later they became much to big for her, or people went over her head. Then she would throw a huge fit over being superceded or another different huge fit over how nobody tells her anything. Case in point: after the first couple of months I started to get really pissed off at how people in my department would openly mock - amongst themselves, behind her back - the account manager who was making the company the most money. Let's call her Pageant Queen, because she was one at one point in her life. PQ was, let's be fair, unhinged, and she absolutely demanded the most attention and service from my department. And especially me! Because her main deal after a while was Canada. Nobody else had the energy for it. I never had a problem with PQ even though she was incredibly Type A and frighteningly tactless. This is because: I'm not an asshole and I don't mind working when I'm at work. It turns out this was a unique attitude to have. Later I would learn that absolutely everyone in the company hated this woman who was making them cash money hand over fist. But at first I didn't realize that everyone hated PQ. I just thought it was the dumb cocksuckers in my department, who would compare their ankle widths to hers and coo over the favorable difference aloud (PQ was a slender and well-groomed pageant queen but she had "cankles.") They would stand around in the back of the office in a group of three or four, lift their pants legs, and turn their slender office harpy hocks to and fro, admiring. And that was just one stupidity of many. They hated everything PQ said or did and discussed this hate very obviously in front of me, and Crazy Viet Boss, and everyone else on the planet except PQ and her immediate cube neighbors. I had two meetings with CVB over this issue, because I really took it to heart. PQ was my primary account manager. I worked with her all day long. She worked long thankless hours and made sure we all had deluxe health insurance. There was no reason to treat her in such a schoolyard bullshit way. I felt this was very obvious. In the first meeting, CVB didn't really bother to listen to my complaint. She thought I had a problem with PQ, and she urged me to take it up with PQ directly, since she, the Crazy Viet Boss, had no authority over account managers, and she did not like to deal with PQ anyway. She didn't say that last part, per se; she just meant it. In the second meeting, CVB threw up her hands and said there was nothing she could do about this problem, it had lasted forever, nobody listened to her, and the department was, in that regard, totally out of her control. And how could she do anything about stuff that people said, anyway? "But - I mean," I began, "You should see the emails. They're using company email to slam this person, CVB." She gave me a very sly look that I didn't understand until much later, and then said, "I don't have any authority to do that. It is all out of my hands." Then she spent another 17 minutes discussing how powerless she was as I gently murmured supportive and loyal sentiments. The sly look meant that she was always reading everyone's email, which she could do from her own desk with no problems, and with nobody being aware of it. Well if you can't do anything about it, maybe PQ can, I thought. One night when I had to stay late, PQ was also there late, and eventually we were the last people there. I had a chat with her about what was happening in the department, and how CVB refused to do anything, and how much bullshit it was, collectively. Pageant Queen was pissed in that precise and effective manner that only very Type A people can be. The next morning, by the time I had gotten to the office half the people in the department had been pulled into one-on-one meetings with the company president over the matter. CVB pulled me into a meeting of our own later in the day. "Did you tell PQ....?" Guileless, with the innocence that only a former warehouse worker could have, I said. "Yeah." CVB did not look happy. "So you are the tattletale. You have stirred up a lot of trouble, Zseni." WTF? Then there was a long long talk about how horrible it is to go over CVB's head, how powerless and helpless she feels, how this problem is too big for her to handle now, how I could get in a lot of trouble for it, and then, finally, she said "I don't know why you did this. You should have talked to me about this problem. That's all you have to do when you have a problem like this - talk to me." "But I did, CVB. We had two meetings about it." "WELL THAT IS ALL YOU HAD TO DO." Then she went back to her desk and told everyone - you know, all the people who had just been upbraided by the company owner individually - that I had been the one who went to PQ. |
