I'm training my replacement at work (because I got transferred). This guy was chosen to replace me because of his "computing background" (I was a software admin and Crystal Report designer). Specifically, he has an "MIS" degree, which I guess stands for Management Information Systems. He went to the same undergraduate school that I did, although attentive FoK-watchers may recall that my degree was in music theory and not anything computer related. Topics that I am in the process of explaining to him:
-what a database is
-what a variable is
-what a remainder is (not kidding about this, he didn't know such a thing existed, I spent about an hour on it last week) (--- pernicious influence of calculators?)
Which begs the question: what exactly is a Management Information System? Is it on a computer? Do they manage information? How do they do this without the use of things like databases and variables? I guess maybe that's a misread - maybe the systems inform managers of things. Maybe without computers. =(
I guess what I'm saying is, Michigan State now has a degree even more worthless than telecommunications or music theory. At least in the criminal justice program they teach you how to gangbang cheerleaders. Or so I understand. |
