The Linux-based Linksys routers (Linux was used in their early models, then phased out for cost reasons, then reintroduced in an Enthusiast model) can take a variety of aftermarket firmwares, all of which expose the transmitter's power setting in the setup webpage (by default, it's set to a fraction of the transmitter's capability). In my experience, it won't help.

User reviews of wireless repeaters is generally positive, and this seems like the way to go. Most people complain that the setup is complicated.
