HOW TO repair a broken chair by Ray of Light 05/26/2007, 12:54pm PDT
The chair in this example is an arrowback windsor style in oak. The crosspiece has pulled free from the leg.

Materials and Tools

  • drill with 1/8" bit
  • dremel tool with sanding or grinding bit
  • 1" finishing nail
  • Construction adhesive or white glue
  • 10" long rigid thing (screwdriver pictured turned out to be too long, I used a pair of scissors instead)
  • heavy shirt (not pictured)
  • safety goggles (not pictured)
  • Vise-Grips or vise (not pictured)

Preparing the pin

Secure the nail and sand the head to a point, so that there is a point on both ends. A wood sanding bit does fine and won't take long.

Making pilot holes for the pin

Gently maneuver the crosspiece to one side. Drill a shallow (~1/4") hole in each piece.

Setting the pin

Slather the nail in glue and stick one end into a hole. If your hole is off-axis, bend the nail to center. Put a bunch more glue all over the end of the crosspiece -- anywhere it will make contact with the leg. Push the chair back together and wipe away excess glue.

Shirt-clamping

Drape the shirt over the chair legs so that the legs are inside the torso of the shirt. Stick your scissors into the shirt and twist them around to make it tight. Then rest them on the crosspiece and the tension will hold them in place.

Waiting

Wait 24 hours. Use chair!
