Leveling items/specialists instead of characters is still grinding. After a certain point, generally around the end of the main story, you've opened up all available skills and the game turns into pumping up character/item stats. I kind of wish there were more limitations on weapons/characters like a stricter limit on the amount of skills each can learn, like maybe one passive skill per character and maybe only like 8-10 regular skills instead of 32. Or hell, have two different modes with one allowing anything you want and the other having more defined limits. Don't get me wrong, I loved the main story battles in both Disgaea and Phantom Brave, and complaining about the direction the game takes in the bonus stages isn't a huge issue. I just get bored when my goal is to increase some number from five digits to nine.
A fun character to make is a Blob (who has remove 1) and give him the exploding skills for when he is confined and removed along with the Archer's first strike.
Why are you leveling your Knights before you fuse them? Just to get some extra mana?
Yeah, just to get enough to fuse 'em to a Slime to do the Slime fusion thing. I agree with you that they could use some limits to the customization sometimes, as it can get ludicrous, but for some reason it's also completely addictive to me and I really don't have a solid explanation for why these gameswork so well for me. Yes, the exploding skills are completely awesome.
