Google has a reputation as being kind of a cult, barely publishing, and not being open with other academics.

Microsoft Research is well regarded, and MS doesn't vet any papers. MSR does great research and its members are regularily seen at conferences. Bill Buxton is, if not a visionary, an important, visible, and vocal member of the community.

Part of the reason that MSR is so good is because it isn't strongly tied to product development. Its possible that Google researchers are strongly tied to development, which has some benefits but makes exploratory research much harder.
