I just finished Doom 3 for the first time on Xbox. (Short review: TimeSplitters 3 came out the same year and was loads better, but I didn't exactly feel ripped off by Doom 3 at $15, either. 79%) Now I'm looking for more of the same but better. Please rank these titles in order of quality:
I'm confident if you got the Darkness for a similar price it would be an acceptable compromise. Give it a few months.
It's a difficult situation you put me in for some of these, but I'll do my best to rank them.
FEAR (360) : Easily the best gameplay, control, enemy ai, etc out of the games. The marginal storyline and horror effects are just that, but it is the only one of these that I would qualify as a good shooter in addition to a decent horror game. It's a little dated, and flagrantly overpriced for a port, but it's actually a good game above and beyond the very forgiving (on the part of the players) horror genre.
Condemned (360) : While the gameplay and execution are simply awful, the repetitiveness painful, and the technology off and on, Condemned squeaks in above Darkness because it was a launch title and pretty decent as they go. Where it loses points for execution it gains some back for effort and style. I personally found it difficult to finish, but did not regret playing it. At today's bargain price I can't imagine that being any different.
The Darkness (360) : You know how I feel about this. Where it stands relative to the two above is largely because it was released after them and still managed to screw up more than they did. Now, granted, I'd take the Darkness combat (god mode) over Condemned's pussy who can't fight Silent Hill knockoff, but that's just because I don't enjoy playing the latter role even (especially) in horror games. Once it drops to less than 20$, it might rank even with Condemned.
Call of Cthulhu (Xbox) : Um, the intro alone was almost worth the 6$ I paid for the pc version. Unfortunately, the rest of the game is unplayable. There is no difficulty curve, just memorization, frustration, and frequent death you have almost no control over. Attrition might have got me through the whole game. I lost interest within hours of actually acquiring my first weapon.
The two below I don't know anything about. However, I will rank Pit Of Ultimate Darkness (KitH) over any other Canadian horror import, and possibly Garth Marengi's Darkplace (Channel 4) as the UK representative.
Zombies Ate My Neighbours (SNES)
Monster Chiller Horror Theatre (SCTV)
