The Grudge. Scary, and then not. by Bill Dungsroman 11/13/2004, 8:15pm PST
Prior to seeing this film (or really, the preview of the orginal when Erik linked to it on Qt3), I hadn't realized that Japan fetishizes children and young girls because they are actually very scared of them, especially when they open their mouths and/or make clicky sounds.

My favorite part of this remake is that, although again I have not seen the original and cannot compare, it might be the first half-remake. Hell, it still takes place in Japan. The director is Japanese. Is he the same who directed the original? Whatever.

The opening scene is good but annoyingly mysterious, forcing you to shelve it and wait for a moment when the film finally links it up, not all that deftly. Just Here's the reason that happened in the first scene, okee? Still, not so bad. The narrative does a lot of time sequence shifts anyway. What the Hell is wrong with grandma? (five minutes pass, the film jumps to a day or two earlier) Oh.

The film, as I mentioned, is occasionally scary. See it with lots of teenage girls (without their boyfriends in tow). That way, if you don't like the film, you can go home and jerk off over the girls later, or something. It's scary quite a few times, which is good because like a Zucker film with its jokes, only half make it through and the other die from protracted build-up. IS SOMETHING SCARRY ABOUT TO HAPPEN YES I THINK IT WILL OKAY FIVE FUCKING MINUTES LATER the thing that I knew was going to be scary happened, thus naturally it wasn't so. And, of course, a good portion of those are ruined by the previews. WOW THE LITTLE KID OPENED HIS MOUTH WIDE SPOOKY or it was the first couple times I saw it in the trailer. Some of the scary bits are obvious props on strings or tracks, so if Disneyland's Haunted Mansion gets you every time, this film will have its way with you. I swear I heard an pneumatic T-CHUNG during some parts.

Lastly: no boobs; not Sarah's, no AZN, none. And, as much as I love "Cat Out of the Closet" scares, it need not be literally be a motherfucking cat out of a motherfucking closet, K?
