New computar is stable, time to instinctively relive classic games. by Jhoh Clbbl O_____O 08/06/2007, 3:39pm PDT
Previous computer only had 2 USB ports (UNTHINKABLE UNFORGIVABLE), one for the mouse and one for a foot pedal. For complicated reasons, I have an old Airflo (the fan in it burned out like a year ago), and Jso's new main PC gamepad controller is an Xbox 360 controller, which I was gonna use >:O!!!!!!!!!! but I'll just use the Airflo because it still works and seems okay.

Mario 64: First thing I did was copy over Jso's N64 emulator with roms since I was unable to play them on my own computer ever. The emulator is Project 64. In the past I tried playing N64 with keyboard or a gamepad with no sticks, just to see how the games ran, and they weren't that great (although I think it was a different emulator). Now with a modern controller with the sticks, Mario 64 runs great on this swee new computar (The Moathrhaed 9001). I haven't played this game in maybe 10 years, and it is still fun, and it is amazing to revisit this game I played the holy everlovin shit out of (120 stars). Now as I replay it, I am surprised by all the stuff I forgot about the game (usually the requirements for stars). Some shit I forgot and instantly remembered like on instinct. Some of the shit I had forgotten and then just half remembered, like oh I know that I'm supposed to roll a giant snowball, how come this one isn't rolling? Where's the 8th fuckin red coin? And then a little exploration had me refigure it out.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries: Since I have a gamepad controller, I figured I would play a game that you're really meant to play with a flight stick. Our old flight stick is about as old as our first computer and the dead space eventually encompassed all points in space simultaneously (I THINK IT HAD ACHIEVED WARP 10), so I figured at some point in the future I'd get a stix controller and try that. So far the only problem is that it was incredibly easy to torso twist while walking and shooting with a flight stick, but on the Airflo (and any dual shock type controller) the right stick does left and right torso twist but also what seems to be an unbindable throttle control, which I don't really want. The concept worked great in the Mech Assault games, but in this it is more weird because the dead space will default to 17 kph instead of 0, and it still has some wind up and wind down time on the throttle (so you won't achieve max speed instantly if you push the stick all the way up). It is really awkward, and it just leads to me trying not to torso twist unless I don't want to move because sure enough I'll hit up on the stick and I'll start moving but then stop instantly unless you continue to hold up on the stick, so you can't throttle move and torso twist at the same time because it'll bring you down to 17 kph again as soon as you move the stick from forward to the sides. Ugh. Aside from that it is still a fuckin swee game. Plus clear framerate with all graphical settings maxed, although I think it had that on the old computer anyway.

Half-Life 2: Episode 1: Suddenly everything is all light bloomy and fuckin ensmoothened grafix and higher framerates than I've ever seen. Clearly they had designed the game to be seen with HDR and I just never tried it (HDR was available on the old computer but not recommended with the processor I was using, and my framerate was mediocre enough as it was even without HDR on then). Boy it's awesome.

Jso has done a bunch of this shit himself. He was saving a few reinstalls for getting a new computer. He even reinstalled Battlefield 2 just to see it with the graphics up, which are still not too special probably but look better maybe shit I dunno. He was mentioning reinstalling Far Cry to see that with all the shit up or at least all the shit on medium. I do know that WOW actually looks really nice graphically on his computer because it has every single effect on with light bloom shiny effects and actually clear textures instead of the old blurry shit we were used to, along with the death screen having the actual death filter on with everything monochrome blue and blurry, and underwater blur and shit that looks nice. Now if only the game was not a painful slog just to walk from one shitty town to another to do the same old quests over and over again a million times over. WOW would actually be a really good single player game if it was made to be played single player and you got a mount right at the beginning (which you should anyway, and for fuckin free too).

It is more of a problem with the game than the controller. NT by Jhoh Clbbl O_____O 08/06/2007, 5:38pm PDT NEW
