And in case I never mentioned it here before, in my interests of proving again and again that Nethack has been outdone a million times over, here's the freeware game Notrium a robinson crusoe in space survial game utilizing (rather messily) the Crimsonlands engine.
I was just gonna post something about Notrium if nobody had but Mischief Maker of 2006 is on the case it seems. I think your comparison to NetHack is way wrong though. When I first played Notrium I felt like I was snorting a distilled mixture of NetHack, Pikmin, and Crimsonland, and for maybe four hours I was totally high on it. God damn what an awesome first section of a game that was--it provided NetHack's sense of freedom, combined with visually flavorful settings and arcade-ish fightin' action. Then I died for the third or fourth time, and started over for the third or fourth time (I was playing totally hardcore), and realized that I was just doing the same thing over. I have restarted NetHack dozens of times, and every time it is fun. But Notrium is a one-shot puzzle... albeit a really fricking awesome one. It is a fundamentally lesser game, and everyone should play it anyway.
