yup, it sucks by FABIO 09/09/2007, 9:53pm PDT I liked it better when it was called Event Horizon and knew from the start that it was supposed to be a horror movie instead of constantly trying to switch back and forth between horror and 2001/2010. I lost count of how many scene for scene ripoffs of Event Horizon there were, lost track s somewhere around 7: Investigate distress beacon from earlier missing ship, forced to board other ship to salvage its air after explosion on original ship, abandoned ship covered with crusted remains of dead crew, fragmented log of former captain going insane, crew briefly forced out of airlock without suits, crew member in coma waking up and committing suicide, burn victim boogie man killing everyone (which made sense in the context of EH's supernatural evil, but was totally out of place in Sunshine and was only there because the screenwriters needed some sort of tension at the end and they were ripping off EH verbatim up until that point, so why stop now? oh and at the end the boogie man just disappears for no reason), last two surviving crewmen are a young man and the hottest woman, crises ends when the ship is separated into two. Then there's the lifted imagery of deadly open coolant pools and rotating blades. The only parts that weren't direct ripoffs of Event Horizon were the parts that were direct ripoffs of 2001 and 2010 (I'M SORRY DAVE I CANT DO THAT). I'd bet money that those black "monoliths" sticking out of the snow at the very end were a nervous chuckle by the writers trying to pass off their plagiarism as "homage". Tips for spaceship design: if your design insists on placing the controls for the computer inside the liquid nitrogen coolant tank, try to throw in a couple of protective suits for maintenance. Tips for filmmakers: a subliminal frame flash works if you use it once. Half a dozen and it becomes an annoying, predictable gimmick.
