Hey what do you think of my Latin?
Anyway, perhaps instead of dead, music is going the way of novelty/funny songs, good ones. It explains why Weird Al actually seems to be writing more original stuff and there is actual attention to musical quality. Nowadays, perhaps a good song is one that has good music and is funny. Boy those musicians have their work cut out for them then. Especially the ones that don't have any funny songs or are just plain humorless (coldhead, linkin bizkit, perfect tool, sacred snatch, twisted pussy whatever).
Anyway it explains why some of the best music of this decade consists mainly of the Tenacious D albums, and this Portal song. The age of humorless self-serious and pretentious music is over, it is time for a more ironic meta age of music. Always with a bit of humor, as that Chinese brainwashing guy said in the good version of Manchurian Candidate. I am not saying Tenacious D is the best current band right now (although they might be, mathematically), but it helps that they're one of the few bands that actually knows what a joke most "rock stars" are and turns that into song and laffs material. That is what it is going to take these days I think. Then again, I dunno, it might take 5 to 20 years for the rest of society to catch up to me. Yep it sure is lonely at the top, did I mention that yet?
This also explains why Devin Townsend's music is better than all the perfect dark or uh fuckin radiotool or whatever bands. |
