For the most part, I couldn't care less what some "judges" say are the best of a crop like this, so the real gold in this list of games that were submitted (http://www.igf.com/php-bin/entries2008.php).
By having that list out there, the IGF guys are much, much better than the stupid Slamdance competition. I submitted Necrotic Drift to that one last year. My experience basically was:
- Give them $20 as an entry fee
- Got a rejection letter, which is fine, but the letter said that while they "particularly liked the game¹s retro format. (They) would have liked to see you add to that format and push the envelope a bit more." Which isn't really useful feedback.
- Saw them invite the Super Colombine Massacre RPG guy to the competition, make him a finalist, and then pull his game.
- Saw many of the rest of the finalists withdraw their games from the whole thing
- At no point, AFAIK, was a submitted games list ever made available. I got a break on the entry fee because it was a text game, but Jesus Christ, everyone else who gave them $30 got less for their money than a cheap banner ad somewhere.
