Gameplay?
Close. There are some annoying enemies that really put a cramp in things, but once you get used to them you can do some rad shit. Also Nero feels more intuitive than Vergil ever did for me. It skirts just slightly under DMC 3 here, but it can seem really far off if you start the game playing Nero like Dante. When you fall into it Nero feels like a pretty decent character (even if his major damage relies entirely on just frame trigger pulls) and Dante is pretty much as good as he's ever been.
The boss fights are big, dynamic, and impressive. Nero's boss tactics involve grabbing the enemies while they're vulnerable and jamming buttons ala Godhand, where as Dante does basically what he's always done. There are less bosses, with the main ones being recycled for Dante. All the bosses move around, and none feel like fighting a wall. There's nothing as impressive as when DMC 3 recycled an earlier boss fight into a normal enemy, but DMC 4's boss fights are fun and you won't mind doing them again on Dante.
Nero doesn't get new weapons/styles, and since you're playing him for the most of the game Dante only ends up with three weapons. His sword, the classic gauntlets, and a new weapon called Lucifer, which is pretty technical, as Mischief Maker might say, it's a true player's choice. Dante's styles are pretty much the same, Trickster lost it's 3x dash, Royal Guard gives you a super suit of armor, and Sword Master is still my favorite. He eventually gets the Yamato as an extra style, which feels more like a special gun than a style. You can switch them on the fly, but I really don't.
Nero's grabs are definitely cool and give him a various amount of options during combat, like corralling some enemies leaping up into the air, grabbing one, and throwing him down on to the mass(then repeating). One bitch is that throws can't be canceled, but I guess the idea is to keep you from being tempted to constantly throw people around as Nero. Nero also gets four combos on his single sword, has an aerial rave ability, gets a dodge, and can drop kick. So it's not as if he's lacking in function when compared to Dante.
Nero just requires a different style of play than Dante, and I enjoy it. One other bitch, Dante's combo that does a circular slash around him is Y, pause, Y, Y ... where Nero's Y, Y, pause, Y, Y ... WHY?
I was thinking of going back to DMC 3 but DMC 4 has me hooked. They also added a "hell and hell" mode, reports on it are varied and retarded.
Humor?
Low to none. When you're playing as Dante all his story cutscenes are goofy, and some had me loling something fierce. However, it's not to the extent of DMC 3 which was distilled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles good times. I liked the story recap feature, it points out that Trish was made by Mundus resemble Dante's mother, which still has me reeling with confusion. There may be something to be had in Nero's cutesy blushing/angsty scenes with his girlfriend, but nothing at the level of filling trish's(mom's) dark heart with light.
The action in cut scenes is pretty awesome. I was momentarily struck by the Spiderman parallel as Nero beats the living fuck out of demons so he can catch his girlfriend's recital, I guess puppet demons are pretty fucking standard fare in DMC's world. There are some other good cutscenes action-wise, but it's not as regularly absurd as everything in DMC 3 was. |
