I read this book in grade 9 (US ninth grade). It was the story of an orphan who had the occasional violent tendency and the occasional firebug tendency, but the book is told from his perspective, so we know he's ultimately a good kid. He either gets taken into a foster home or escapes a foster home or something... and ends up in the woods. There he meets up with two dudes who sort of take him in, as much as homeless people can take anyone "in". One of the dudes is a mute Native American. They teach him how to live off the land and do chores around the shack, and life turns out to be pretty sweet! But they've always gotta keep an eye on his fire play. |
