I have only been fired once in my life, and it was totally for this. I used to work at a restaurant famous for the psychosis of its owners. Because I was taller than everyone else and not prone to error, I didn't have to suffer much for it, but the place was full of all kinds of petty abusive bullshit. There was a girl who worked there (who, for the record, I was not attracted to; she wasn't svelte enough for me) who couldn't handle it and just stopped showing up. They wouldn't mail her last check to her (which was a big deal, because that was how we got our credit card tips), because they wanted her to have to come in so they could yell at her and feel all important and awesome. The checks were kept in a box that anyone could get to, so I just decided to take hers and bring it to her, mostly out of spite for the sort of person who gets a big hard on for making people unhappy.
So despite the psychosis, they didn't fire me outright (this too I think had to do with me being tall). Instead, I got a week of crappy shifts, and was going to get worse the following week. I went around telling the other staff that they were firing me but were too lame to do it outright, and one morning while I was getting ready to come in for some crappy brunch shift the passive-aggressive toady manager called me and said not to come in. |
