the umps do very well on the whole

John can be forgiven for thinking baseball might be good, since he's apparently never seen an actual game.

NBA: openly on the take. Convicted of being for sale. Completely incompetent as a whole. Sports writers discuss, with no irony, the fact that they are a horrible, retarded set of semi-humans with absolutely no talent at their chosen profession. Zero paws out of roar.

NFL: several times a year a game is so egregiously officiated that the league office needs to step in and "apologize." I root for what has historically been the worst team in the history of professional sports, but this is compounded by the fact that there are several games where I have felt the officials were paid for. I'm 100% convinced that the officiating crew made an enormous amount of money on the Pittsburgh/Seattle Super Bowl. (Either that, or their families were allowed to live.) Only group that can look at video replay from several different angles and still get the call laughably wrong. Zero paws out of roar.

NHL: I did not have time to watch any hockey games this year. Maybe they have improved, but the two bigs things were always that there was talk that they'd crack down on the clutching and grabbing but then give it up by mid-December, and that they would swallow their whistles in overtime in playoff games. I have no idea if that's still the case. Two paws out of roar.

MLB: Maybe once every couple of years there is a horrible call in a game that means something. Throughout 162 games (and it is ridiculous that they play that many) things tend to even out. I can honestly say I have never seen a game played by the BLUE JAYS where they would have won except the ump fucked them. I think they are the best of the bunch, which means three paws out of roar.

I assume NCAA football and basketball refs are better than their professional counterparts, because of the low quality their peers exhibit. I also assume that soccer has the best officiating, because all you have to pay attention to is whether or not a guy is offsides or if he used his hands. Every single player reacts as if they received sniper fire to their testicles when anything at all happens (also a problem in the NBA) so I don't see how you can have good or bad refs when they could hand out 11 red cards a side a game and still not have tossed all the losers that dressed for both teams.
