That was a revelatory moment in my life and I'm glad you remembered it(!), but you don't fully understand that situation! In addition to the obvious and maybe bad reasons for choosing to use my MP3 player at that time, please realize there's a lot of disgusting hippy shit going on over there that's so stupid it would make you sick and you've got to do certain things you wouldn't otherwise do to signal to them (and yourself!) that you're not a part of that scene for the sake of your own identity! I think if I wasn't wearing my MP3 player, I would have felt like I was just going through the motions or mimicking Americans and I didn't like the Americans and I didn't want to feel a connection with them or for them to talk to me about how great it was afterwards because I actually thought it was quite shit. I rode a camel for days to get there and there's quite a lot of pressure to personalize a moment like that and I felt if I didn't personalize it, I'd feel like a fraud who was only doing these things for the sake of it or because he was told it was cool. Three of the girls on that morning slept through it and I thought they were stupid at the time, but they were European and I should have known better. I've now seen enough beautiful shit including supposedly the world's greatest sunrise at Angkor Wat to believe that sunrises are not an engaging or meaningful activity. Nature is usually overrated. Even volcanoes are quite shit, would you believe!
