| The appeal of EVE is that it's all about killing other people and making them cry. Unlike a lot of other RPGs, having better stuff and a higher level doesn't make you invincible against weaker people. In EVE, some ship/euipment that's about 10-30% better costs 100 times as much, so you and some friends in your relatively cheap ships can blow up a sockshitter's fancy toy that costs the equivalent of $100-$2000 of real life money (there is an official system in place for people to buy monthly passes then sell them for in-game money). You listen to them cry, steal their shit that shat in socks for 100 hours to get, and sell it to other sockshitters for enough money to keep yourself in the black for months using stuff that's 90% as good as what sockshitters pay for.
But there are so many problems with EVE that it's just not worth it to most people. The learning curve is ridiculous, 60% of the mechanics are never explained in game. All NPC content is ridiculously tedious, and the tutorial gives the impression to new people that doing missions, THE most tedious out all the tedious content, is the best way to go. Mining is a boring and complete waste of time to the point that the only people who do it are chinese gold farmers and macro scripts. The engine bogs down with lag whenever there are more than 20 people in the same spot. In big fights of 50 and up it becomes completely unplayable. The art direction is horrible. You're staring at black 98% of the time. All those promo videos of beautiful lasers and explosions are a complete lie; nobody ever sees that in-game. All combat is fought at the max zoomed out level where everything is an icon because otherwise everything runs at 1 fps. For all practical purposes it might as well be a text-based game. If nothing else WoW is very pretty to look at and if there's anything Blizzard can do well it's making colorful attractive environments that run well on most computers. Meanwhile EVE figures that the way to go is having everything run in 2000x resolution with more and more detailed lighting effects and ship skins for stuff that nobody looks at anyway while leaving everything else totally black and the whole thing runs like a slideshow. |
