I saw Steven Seagal in concert. I thought it was gleefully embarrassing and, because I feel for him the way one feels for an awkwardly drunk uncle, I cheered him on with all my orcish heart. His backup band, Thunderbox, was really good. Steven Seagal was himself not bad although prone to racist dialectics and a lot of other wank.
I downloaded his albums and listened to them a couple times. I would listen to them again before I listened to anything of the ilk of Dave Matthews - that is to say, his pudgy white pop take on the blues is less offensive than Dave Matthews' pudgy white pop take on jazz.
He can play blues guitar pretty good. I saw him do it in person!
His songs are frequently awkward, like his movie performances, but nevertheless passable.
Overall I feel that he has nothing to apologize for. He is up against other first-movies-then-music artists like Eddie Murphy, Patrick Swayze, and Don Johnson, and I would rate his efforts above all three (except for "My Girl Wants To Party All The Time.")
I wouldn't put a Steven Seagal song on a mixtape except to annoy you guys with. I don't think his albums or his movies are Great with a Capital Gee; I like them because of the Seagalian saga that ties them all together. Like I said in my original I Went To A Steven Seagal Concert post, I love Steven Seagal because he's a guy I can really understand in a way that I can't understand a lot of other celebrities: he tries too hard, and he keeps trying too hard no matter how often he's successful. He can never be successful enough to outrun his failures, which mount almost as fast as his successes anyway!
BDR likes to point to my Seagal hobbyism and say "now THERE goes a desperate fatty." BDR doesn't realize that my Seagal hobbyism is prompted by the same overarching affection and compassion for fuckups that attracts me to him. Don't you go making that same mistake, Last. |
