Blue Wish Resurrection Plus Challenge by Mischief Maker 06/21/2008, 11:05am PDT
So I'm spending the summer working an internship at a DA's office in what I used to think was a sleepy little northwoods resort town. There's no internet at the place where I'm staying and there's no way in hell I'm getting caught browsing Caltrops on a District Attorney network computer, (Not to point fingers at anyone, Jerry) so I can only post here about once a week when the local library's hours overlap with my free time.

Anyway, it's been unseasonably cold for the last two weeks and I have been playing the shit out of my shmup collection and I've come to the conclusion that while Cho Ren Sha is a classic, Warning Forever is great addictive fun, and Kenta Cho's shmups are playable works of art, the Best shmup available for the PC right now, freeware or otherwise, is Blue Wish Resurrection Plus.

So I propose a Caltrops Blue Wish Resurrection Plus High Score contest. We'll play for score and post the results to this thread.

BWR is heavily based on Ketsui, one of the most highly sought-after arcade shmups by Cave. Fussbett, I saw DoDonPachi in your list of favoite MAME games, Ketsui is by the same company. The scoring system is simple to understand and rewards aggression. There's just 2 things you need to know:

1. When enemies explode, they leave behind blue rubiks-cube-looking point items that automatically fly to your ship, but get smaller and lose value the further they have to fly. To maximize your score you must be right on top of the enemy when they explode.

2. Scattered throughout the levels are hidden treasure chests. If you fly over them and shoot them, they will pour out an infinite supply of fixed value point items so long as they're on screen. The higher up on the screen you uncover them, the more points you get. These are almost always hidden under obvious landscape features and always underneath the wreckage of a large ground turret after you destroy it.

The contest will be played with Blue Wish Resurrection Plus 1.11. You can DL it here. If you don't know how to navigate vector, a graphical guide can be found here.

We'll start the contest on the easiest game settings, so it won't be hard for beginners to compete:

Heaven Difficulty
Guard on
Wait on
Acceleration off
One credit only (Continuing resets your score to 0 anyway).

(I also suggest changing the item sound to #3, as the default sound is really irritating)

Note that with guard on, if your ship is hit, you will automatically cancel all the bullets onscreen at the cost of one bomb, but will take a heavy penalty out of your score. It is always better to bomb manually. Also remember that the yellow dot that appears on your ship when you focus your shots forward represents the size and location of your hitbox.

Post your scores in this thread, preferably with a screenshot (hosted on imageshack) to back it up. BWR can be a little touchy with Print Screen and about half the time you only get a black screen. Hitting "Left" at the records section will bring up the "Heaven" difficulty scores so you can try again. Remember, highest score wins, not who got the farthest. As player 2 in Contra 3 said, "Let's be aggressive!"

Good Luck, fags!
