Stanislaw Lem has a great bit in one of his short story collections about how people have intelligence almost as a consolation prize for not having instinct. Animals have instincts, and they'll do, absolutely unforced, exactly what they need to do to survive. People are stuck with intelligence, the Loser's Instinct, which carries with it freedom, but freedom is also a sucker bet because all it means is that you can do stuff which is non-optimal for survival.

This is all declaimed unto the audience by a brilliant computer. The computer misses the point, of course, just like Tom Chick does; with intelligence and freedom comes agency, consent, and the ability to do things which transcend mere survival - like creating a brilliant computer.

But a lot of people are uncomfortable with freedom.

Like good Protestants they obsess about accidentally wasting their lives or being incorrect about something and they want reassurance, guidance, direction, instruction. They don't like people who are comfortable being free and making choices; those people seem unstable and wasteful, like gypsies or evil scientists. Fortunately people who want reassurance and direction are very useful to organizations of all kinds. We elide seamlessly into Focault's Discipline And Punish and arrive at one of its secondary conclusions as well: that docile bodies are useful to governments. Docile bodies nearly represent the power of governments. And so the docility of qt3 posters reflects Tom Chick's power, and like peasants under a popular king, they are happy to take part in that kind of comfortable, safe, unthinking power relationship.

Tom, in return, promises to his posters that he will always take steps to maintain a homogenously docile environment. Thus: banning "cunt" and Creex.

Anyway, it's certainly the case that docile people are bad at telling jokes. BDR is our point man on this, plunging into the canyon of unfunniness like a hustled buffalo as soon as he was driven from the fruitful plains of Caltrops.

WELL WHATEVER YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. One thing I know from observation (which in a way validates me going onto IRC at all let alone the Darknest IRC channel) is that people will claim to be really pro freedom and then act in complete contradiction so simultaneously that you'd think there wouldn't be room for those two opposites to exist in the same space without some kind antimatter reaction (rotate phase modulation to keep the borg guessing).

Sometimes I would talk to the couple of moderators that I was sort of friends with, and I would actually try to be honest with them. It's always kind of funny to see people who insist they really want to know what you think, just to have you tell them and watch them immediately regret asking. I may have forced this on people a few times; I would usually say "you don't want to know" which of course would just make them want to know, until I told them, where they would realize that they indeed didn't want to know.

Anyway from my yakking with the moderators that I actually attempted to be honest with, I would always tell them that from what I've seen throughout the history of the internet, moderated message boards have always been a negative influence on truly free conversation (or in a more big picture way, I always thought they were a negative influence on people's ability to face reality), and if I was really going to speak freely it would have to either be in private or in an actually free forum, which definitely did not include Darknest. This was usually when they would go into all the things about the people on the boards who needed to be enforced, and usually I would understand what they were saying, especially because it's a higher traffic site and they probably get a lot more morons, or at least underage people who aren't supposed to be on the site according to their rule page, and I could definitely understand trying to police underage people for the legal reasons.

However, there was always a thin line that is easily crossed by any place that is moderated, and that is once an admin or mod decides for someone else what they can or can't say, either by locking a thread, or post editing, or banning, or even giving them a warning. As soon as that's done, it's all over, you don't have a place for free discussion, no matter how much you think that the discussion is free, at the real core of the matter it isn't. I know why they do it, they say that if they let people run rampant all the time then the boards would be a wasteland of shitty posting and shitty threads, and I can understand that. I'm just saying as soon as you step in to police it, it's not free anymore. I think the the two people I talked to about this understood what I was saying and knew that the board would never be like that. I don't know if they ever understood that I couldn't be like that myself. I think after all these years of clapstro (and even OMM) I just can't feel free having a discussion anywhere but here without feeling like at some point someone will go running to a moderator to step in to decide who gets to talk and who doesn't. It's happened probably a million times all over the internet, and it doesn't seem like anyone wants to question it, except here, which doesn't really do any good because we already know this shit. I think that Benjamin Franklin, or me, said that people who will trade freedom for security will lose both and deserve neither. I bet a lot of people who quote that don't realize that it applies directly to them, but it definitely applies to any message board that moderates at all, because that's exactly what they're doing, they're just trading freedom for security, they're losing both, and they deserve neither.
