When used in that context, I typically interpret it to mean a nation of people, not a geographical area or political regime. If we put ourselves first, then we have only one person looking out for us. Whereas if we put each other first, we each have the entire population at our service. A good example would be the millions of Canadians out there contributing tiny fractions of their income so I won't have to get a job. Suckers. |
