Last night I went to Hana Hana late enough that the karaoke machine was up and six girls from all creeds and colors were doing vengeful, hideous, slaughtering damage to "Cat's In The Cradle", "Sweet Child O' Mine", "Killing Me Softly" (Roberta Flack original version), and a variety of other tunes. They were having fun! That's something I can't do, so I was jealous.

First the Weaponsmith begged me to go up and sing. Then the waiter, Yeung, who likes to grope my brother, begged me to go up and sing. THEN THE KOREAN SUSHI CHEF WHO DOESN'T SPEAK A WORD OF ENGLISH BEGGED ME TO GO UP AND SING. He had Yeung inform me that there was free sake involved in my going up and singing. The sushi chef! With his happy round face twisted into an embarassed rictus as "Stephanie" grunted through "Billie Jean (Is Not My Lover)." Usually these guys don't even notice me. It's my brother they love, I'm just along for the ride. If they hadn't been so plaintive and desperate, I would even have felt flattered. They shouldn't have installed a karaoke machine in the first place.

I didn't sing, half because I was afraid after all that hulking up that I would muff it and ruin everyone's hopes, but also half because I didn't want to piss on the girls' fun. Although they pissed on my dinner. :( But I promised everyone that next time we went, I would go up and actually sing a song. And now my bowels clench with fear at the prospect. I used to do an awesome Tom Jones impression, but then I saw a BBC show where the fat psychologist chick does a pretty good Tom Jones and now I associate Tom Jones with being a fat psychologist. I can't attach my name to that, not in front of elegant bishie Yeung.

So help me pick a song, fellow fags! Rock is right out, I have to stick to pop. I'm a middling soprano that can under duress dip into alto, maybe even a bit lower, but the mic is amped so much at this place it's best to keep away from the high notes and anything powerhousey. As is right and good for an orc valkyrie I can really belt a song out but I can also not belt, and that's probably best in this situation. You have plenty of power and breath control to work with in any event, and the library of songs you might expect on a reasonably well-endowed karaoke machine.

Yeung and the sushi chef would probably be most gratified by a ballad. WHAM! is enjoying a minor comeback in Japan right now, so I was thinking maybe "Careless Whisper", but that's a little low in my range. Same thing with "Wrapped Around My Finger." What I don't know is how far back the catalog goes, because what I'd like to do is Cole Porter songs or maybe Jacques Brel, but all I've ever heard there is 70's-90's stuff. I'm shot. I can't actively think about American/English pop music between 1970 and 2000. Suggestions!!!! Please! I have about a week and a half to two weeks to prepare before I get dragged back there.
