I saw it a few years ago and remember really laughing at parts. "Did you just say suck a fuck!?", the kid in the video shouting "I'm NOT afraid!", some Patrick Swayze thing?

I had questions when it was over, so I looked it up online and it seems the director let some big ideas get out of hand and even he can't really explain it all.



I made some predictions about the writer after seeing Donnie Darko:


- He's either a middle aged guy desperately trying to connect with kids (they're hip to the Catcher, and I secretly hate myself for loving kids like Patrick Swazey's character) or a spoiled rich kid who really, really wants to be Holden Caulfield and had all sorts of Barbito-esque thoughts about how an imagined mental disorder made him different growing up.

- He's the kind of guy convinced that he has this PRFOUND idea for a mind bending sci-fi movie, but doesn't realize it's just a mess of borrowed points from his favorite Twilight Zone episodes and 12 Monkeys.

- Seriously. American Beauty. Right down to the messed up family boy meets messed up family girl, unfulfilled caricature harpy woman listening to bullshit motivational guru tapes, main character narrating his death at the end during cloud footage.


Two out of three correct. Fourth unconfirmed.

My grad film was this over the top, gonzo, completely absurd sci-fi thing with non- professional actors. When you have actors in their fifties who are still doing student films, you're not going to get top-of-the-line. It was a thing with a teleportation chamber, with a mad scientist and it was completely absurd. It cost $60,000, but it was completely campy.



Bonus:

Jake Gyllenhaal went on to play the exact same character in The Good Girl, this time dropping all pretense and naming him Holden.
