Literally. Your beginning town is a place where money doesn't exist. One guy runs up and says that someone gave him "something called money, whatever that is," and hides it in a well, where you can take it but the game says you put it back. So far the game still has currency but in the form of items, like you can find nuts in the woods which you can pick up (and go into your EXTREMELY limited inventory like in Earthbound) and trade for nut cookies or nut bread (restores health). Very early in the game you see the forest catch fire and guys in pig masks and outfits run around throwing grenades and shit. You later find out that they are using EVIL TECHNOLOGY to make the forest animals into evil borg animals that attack you. Spoiler: The dad's wife is killed by a friendly dinosaur, from the beginning tutorial, that is borgified. This happens in the first hour or so of the game.
In a way the story is still mostly goofy with a lot of jokes, even in that spoiler scene. As a story, it actually seems kind of unique in that it wants to tell the story of people from a town, and things which happen. As an allegory it's pretty much anime (which is to say it's down there with fanfiction at the bottom of the writing quality scale; basically Princess Mononoke, except not really as shitty). Still the story itself is interesting because of the characters, and the game itself is a fun old school JRPG experience. I'm wondering if the game's story is not really telegraphing the blindingly obvious, like it might throw a twist in there, but seeing as how this is written by Japanese that's not likely.
Just so you know: a barter economy is not communism. It's basically a purebred form of the capitalist ideal - capitalism without the, uh, capital. The accumlation of which is as good a sign as any that something, somewhere, isn't working right: the ideal form of a free market being an equilibrium brought about by tight competition and therefore low profits. Just sayin'! |
