I am going to feel like an idiot writing this, but we may have some lurkers.
HERE IS WHY THIS IS AWESOME
(NOT EVEN GETTING INTO HOW REALISTIC ADS WOULD BE MORE "IMMERSIVE" THAN FAKE ONES)
Management, as a whole, figured out one thing about game prices after the Nintendo 64: it takes making good games from the length of time that was Donkey Kong to Wave Race 64 to get gamers and parents to accept the idea of the $80 game. They know that's what's required, and otherwise sixty bucks is going to be all we'll pay in America for the average, replacement-level, recently released AAA game.
And there is no way in hell anyone other than Nintendo is interested in making good -- great games for that length of time. If you think Peter Moore and John Riccitiello want anything to do with ensuring that they have made almost exclusively excellent games for fifteen years, then pretend I knew whatever the German word for hello is, because you're living in bombMexico's alternate reality where the Nazis won and some other strange shit went down, like PC football and baseball games existing because the titles weren't worthless for 20 years.
Comic book publishers also figured out that nobody wants to pay more than a buck for a comic, they just don't care. The numbers are, what, a tenth of what was in circulation in the mid-70s? More people bought the Amazing Spider-Man in a month than were at Yankee Stadium in a given month when they were sucking under Mattingly (although Yankee fans are dedicated and passionate, and better humans than anyone else in sports, unless the team happens to be lousy for two years in a row, like every other fanbase on the planet).
So sixty bucks is all people are going to pay for a game - you can maybe get away with charging an extra ten for a PipBoy bobblehead, but that's because Gamestop/EB has made the experience of game purchasing be so downright laughable, that'd I'd personally pay ten for the PipBoy and the last ten for Amazon to send it to me, so I don't have to pick it up from EB in person. That's more of an HR issue, though. But no, the real issue is that inflation makes that sixty worth less every year.
When Steam came out, I lamented the fact that the games weren't any cheaper - but, of course, they were. They got 2% cheaper in this country every year. Valve got to pocket the money they would have spent on ... well, game publishers abandoned the idea of the jewel case anyway, giving us those shitty sleeves, but you know what I mean. The cardboard boxes are expensive, at least. For the same sixty bucks, they were able to tread water, and I didn't have to visit Gamestop.
Furthermore, nobody is sitting through an ad in Far Cry 2, as far as I understand it. That WOULD be a terrible experience that would ruin the game, the same as dropping commercials into the middle of movies. But it sounds like CryTeam is getting money from Ford, who is no doubt pushing the new 9MPG SUV they just developed because gas prices hit $2.80, and putting this ad on a billboard. CryTeam can then use the money to not pay Maya and Adobe for their development tools. How is this a problem?? I swear, 90% of these average gaming forum idiots hear a shrill meme dog whistled to them on a frequency tailored for aspies ("advertising is bad!!") and then lack the mental capabilities to think that it's anything other than a blanket statement that is now dogma. It's like when Fussbett and INC were ripping on them about that WoW funeral thing - they see a chat log and go, "oh! someone said AIM logs are bad! MUST COMMENT THAT CHAT LOGS ARE BAD!" and then fail to understand that a properly formatted and grammatically correct log ripping the shit out of their stupidity has become sarcastic dialogue.
