This is an excellent technical term.

The later FF games have a nice feature where they give you a heads up when you're about to hit the last save point for a while. They still aren't save-anywhere, but I look at this like a technical problem for other people to figure out. All the NES/SNES/PS FF games are now save-anywhere thanks to bright young emulator coders, and the world is a better place for their engineering.
