Consider a shotgun. Ammo is cheap, hitting is easier, and you can opt for sublethal rounds without paying a premium or sacrificing effectiveness.
A pump is mechanically simpler (but you'll have to maintain whatever you buy anyway). A semiauto is faster to fire, harder to jam under stress, and has the advantage of not requiring two good hands to operate.
Do practice regularly, forever. Prior to my brother's deployment, the Army showed him a series of videos about how people perform under life-or-death stress. Not well! Example: cops (used to?) have a drill where they draw, fire twice, and reholster (simulating the execution of a goody-two-shoes who won't "play ball"). Then, in a fight, they would perform this drill even if the fight was still going on after two shots! People will act in a rational, thinking manner until convinced they are about to die, then enter some kind of trance where decision-making capacity is just not there.
You can witness this fascinating phenomenon--in yourself and others--whilst playing TF2.
So, practice with the assumption that higher brain functions will not be at your disposal. In particular, it is vital to commit procedures like reloading, misfire-clearing, and gun-vault-unlocking to muscle memory.
