I've looked into it a little, but it's hard to find the information I really want. What I'm looking for:
This is primarily going to be used in my car. I have a 1 hour one-way commute, and I'm tired of changing CDs in my car all the time. I don't even buy CDs anymore! I have to buy blank ones and burn a million CDs! What is this, 2001? The iPod has an attachment you can buy that finds a dead radio frequency and broadcasts on that so you can play songs through your car stereo, so it is currently the frontrunner. I don't know if the Zune or other MP3 players have similar functionality.
This was me, two years ago. I had a much shorter commute, but drove many other places many times. To be like me, what you want in a solution is a new car stereo. You want one that plays MP3 CDs and has a USB port on the front. They're $100-$169.

Mine is this one: http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10098844&catid=21981 ...but I couldn't find it on the US site.
So not only do you get 700 megs of MP3s onto each 10-cent CDR but because of the USB slot, you can also plug in any $2 flash drive, which as a computer enthusiast you probably already have. No iTunes, no myZune, no DRM.
I already had a $60 MP3 player for jogging:
...which now joins me in the car and plugs right into the stereo for an additional 2 gigs of MP3s. They don't make this model anymore now that Sansa switched everything over to the dumb "slotMusic" idea, but any tiny off-brand mp3 player that doubles as a USB flash drive is a great addition to the MP3 car stereo (they key is NO ADAPTERS. Adapters are the enemy of convenience). You can listen to stuff on the way to work and then unplug it and bring it in with you. In fact anything you plug in there is fine, as it's USB! I had a laptop on a trip once, and I plugged that in and browsed the shit out of that! |
