(Much, much better than the other Resident Evil movies, by far.)

I'd put this at three stars, trending toward three and a half until the last 5 minutes of the movie, but my objection is just that "I woulda done it differently" than anything else. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Some of the best horror movie-making ever at the start. We have a protagonist with an identifiable problem, and I feel Resident Evil works better when we have Grace going back to where her mother died, and Ethan trying to find his girlfriend than whatever the hell the start of 5 was. I enjoyed that we have a courier trying to make a living in These Trying Times, and he's got family considerations. But once we get to the road, it looks so good and is shot so well: the winter driving, the long establishing shots of what should be serene, flat land, lit by the solitary automobiles, the perfect crisp winter nights. It looks so nice!

We get plenty of jump scares early on, some appropriate but not precious "real life puzzles" that our protagonist thinks his way through, great action but not so much that you'd call this an action movie. I think what I really liked about it, as a fan of the RE series and a Zork guy, is that we get some situations from scene to scene that can be puzzled out, and we see our main guy work his way through it. It is the opposite of getting cat hair for a moustache, everything is "organic," I guess is what I am trying to say. There is a fun character actor that shows up a bit in the middle and man, he's great at everything he is in. There is one joke that his character makes that is a callback to the start of the movie. I'm trying to be vague because I hate it when reviewers spoil movies.

There was online discussion about it not being "really" RE, but like with Wolverine, ignore the shrieking idiots online. We get the typewriter, we get the green box of shotgun shells, we get a vomit monster - this is Resident Evil. RE has taken many forms. In fact, I'd go so far to say that if you took this movie and made it a Resident Evil game it would be one of the better ones.

There is probably more I want to say about it, but what a great time at the movies. GOOD JOB ZACH!
