My life, as of late, has been lacking in poetry and conveyor-belt anecdotes, so I was happy to find a site that services both needs, all on one undersized, repeating background.
My newfound calm quickly evaporated, like so much tincture of iodine, when I read of Mao's plan to engage in my most loathed of brewing activities, homebrewing. I started to compose a reply there but cut it short on the realization that that site is just too poetry- and conveyor-belt-oriented to contain my purplish crystals of unalloyed rage.
It's not the brewing itself that chanchres me, it's the underlying value system that leads one to brew his own beer. It's a value system of cowardice and weakness brought to life through Jesuit-like calculation.
Like joining Amway, or the Moonies, homebrewing is superficially a legitimate way to save money, but actually a thinly veiled scheme to financially better yourself on the backs of your friends and their goodwill. No one brews just for himself; it's impossible to consume 8 dozen beer in the 10 days it takes for it to go from "fresh, terrible" to "even worse". Their thinking goes, "I'll brew my own, and when people come over I'll offer it to them and we'll be good friends after that." Sorry, no. Buying friendship has a noble and storied past, but trying to buy it on the cheap conveys an inexcusable lack of respect for the monetary value of your friends' company.
If you don't care enough to buy them a proper beer, at least have the balls to offer them water.
