Repubs and Libertarians like fat darcos won't even allow us to require background checks on 100% of gun sales so does anyone think they'll allow compulsory education and testing to get a gun permit? Throwing up examples of countries with more/less gun violence is part of the straw man smokescreen obfuscation strategy of these assholes.
Please search through the stuff I've written and show where I made that claim or in any way said that. I won't hold my breath waiting for your apology, but you won't ever admit you claimed I said something that I did not.
I have no problem with a requirement that you know how to properly use a gun before being sold one. Here in Maryland they have a very strict law to get a permit to carry a weapon, you can't even open carry in public without a permit, and it's really hard to get one without a good reason, "good reason" being what, in the opinon of the Maryland State Police, is a good reason. In fact, there is a court case here challenging Maryland's restrictions and if it's upheld on appeal, Maryland might go from being a "might issue" state where the government can decide if they want to let you have a gun, to a "shall issue" state where you can get a permit unless you have a disqualifier like mental illness or prior criminal conviction.
Maryland has very strict rules on having a gun in publc. You can open or concealed carry only on your own property. To carry a gun in public if you don't have a carry permit, it has to be in a locked case.
But to even buy a gun in Maryland you have to take a training class; you can go to one or you can take it over the Internet. It shows basic gun safety for revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Once you take the course you get a piece of paper with your information on it. It has two parts, one you keep to show to a gun seller in order to be able to buy a weapon, the other half is mailed to the state police to show that you took the safety course. I've taken and passed it, it's not that hard and I found it to be fun, especially when it shows how a gun loads a round in the chamber and what happens when you fire a round. If you want to try the course, it's free and you can get to it here.

I don't really mind that sort of restriction on the purchase of guns any more than I mind a requirement that you know how to use an automobile before operating it, and the way we prove that is you get a drivers' license. But even at that, in most cases, all a drivers' license shows is you met at least the minimum requirements to operate some automobile, and if you qualify they issue you a class C license. Class B licenses, mostly for bus drivers, and Class A, for commercial tractor-trailers, have much tougher requirements.
So just about anyone who can figure out how to push a car around can get a class C license, that allows the holder to drive anything weighing under 26,001 pounds, which includes anything up to a good-sized box truck. A drivers' license issued for a particular class doesn't mean they are capable of driving a particular vehicle that is within that class, it just means they're licensed to operate some vehicle in that class. As I noted, when you get into commercial licenses there are more stringent requirements, you have to have additional ratings to prove you know what you're doing to operate a vehicle with air brakes or carrying hazardous material. I think if you have a Class A license you can operate a rig with a double (that's a tractor and two tandem trailers), and it may be that, where they allow them, I think you also need an extra endorsement to drive triples (a tractor with three trailers.) They don't generally allow triples here, I think it's mostly out west.
I mean, I had a license and drove for 20 years, but when my sister needed me to be able to drive her car, she had to teach me how, at 35, because I did not know how to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission. Just because I had decades of experience operating cars with automatic transmission, does not mean I had the slightest ability to use one with a stick shift.
But, at least having a drivers' license with some training is a start and it's far better than someone not having some training on how to operate a motor vehicle.
And I don't find requiring someone at least know basic safety rules for handling a gun is an onerous requirement before buying one.
