Well, I've been stuck up here in the Adirondacks for about a year now and I decided that the only way I can keep from shooting my face off is to get out into the woods often. During the summer and into fall this was no problem and I often hiked as much as 40 miles during weekends...EVERY weekend. I'm pretty poor and I dreamt of back-country skiing or snowshoeing this winter--something I've never really done before. I saved money through the fall but a trip to the emergency room and two trips to the mechanic this month wiped out whatever stash I had. So to this point I've been sitting at home getting fatter and masturbating way too much since the snow fell. My mother, bless her, bought me what looks to be a decent pair of snowshoes with telescoping poles for Christmas. I refuse to get lessons and the sparse info I could google told me it isn't hard at all, so I'm just going to teach myself. I was wondering if any of you have evr done it and maybe have any pointers. The snowshoes are "deep powder' (10" x 33") and have heel and toe crampons built in but there's a few pieces of gear I'll need. I have a couple good pairs of gaiters but I seriously need a good pair of winter hikers that won't ruin me (read $100 or less). I also need some good pants. Pretty much everything else I have covered through the gear I accumulated summer-hiking (water filter, survival kit, compass, map program, etc.). The pack I've been using through the summer is internal frame and actually designed for winter hiking. I've been to campmor but it's hard to know what's good, so if anyone has recommedations on brands for gear I would appreciate it too. I also vaguely remember a silly animosity between snowshoers and cross-country skiiers, so is this something I should be wary of? Or should I just puch the fags as they go swishing along?
In other news I asked some "woah cool" guy at EMS last year what were good crampons for boots for basic winter climbing (Adirondack mountains are in no way huge) and he tried to sell me these SERIOUS motherfuckers made for vertical ice climbing. I said that I had no skill whatsoever vertical climbing much less vertical ice climbing. He said "Oh, it's easy." Dumb fuck tried to send me out into the wilderness to climb ice uninstructed.
One last thing, these snowshoes look okay, but I know their not super-professional. If I decide to buy a new pair in the summer say, what are some good brands and models? |
