Server Downtime 6:55PM-8:11PM PST, Bellevue Power Outage by Senor Barborito 01/24/2003, 11:33pm PST
Much of the downtown area blacked out here - the outlying wealthy suburbs on the hills overlooking the lake just west of here (and the houses on the non-lake facing on the hill outside our window) were of course fine, but as I said the downtown area and those of us three blocks south of where the downtown area ends (it's pretty clearly defined by a major road) were dead in the water for an area. I'd like to say it won't happen again, but I'd be lying. System noticed some bad blocks while checking the filesystem for the daemon chroots but salvaged all without incident. Similarly Postgres squinted at me funny (IMPROPER SHUTDOWN . . . RESYNCING, etc.) as it booted but went up and appears to be working without a hitch.

I'd say this won't happen again, but I'd be lying. If all our downtimes come strictly from non-acts-of-God power outages and the rate is what I've observed thus far we should have one more this year. If you'd like to prevent these incidents, I'd be happy to accept donations towards a caltrops.com UPS, but my personal feeling is that it isn't needed.

My real worry is that I was overwriting the old backup during the transfer from server to archive HD JUST as the power went out, but no problems seem to have arisen.
