Hype: Death for console games, good for PC? by FABIO 08/28/2004, 10:14pm PDT
After several crushing dissapointments and surprise goodies, I've realized that within the past year every console game that I've looked foward to and had been hyped extensively has sucked, and that all the gems have been titles that totally slipped under the preview radar and just sort of appeared on the shelf one day.

The evidence

-Dissapointing or just flat out crappy games that had so much hype and promise:

tales of symphonia - Star Ocean 2 with four player combat? No, less fun combat with broken camera.

siren- The creator of the original Silent Hill reinventing the survival horror genre once more? No, crappy stealth game plus king's quest level puzzles.

silent hill 3- Learning from their mistakes from SH2 to restore the series to greatness? Sort of, but not quite.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance- Portable version of the best Strategy RPG ever? No, dumbed down shit.

Final Fantasy:CC- Four player Secret of Mana with revolutionary GBA as controller? No, boring Gauntlet played for no reason on uncomfortable controllers with dying batteries.

Fatal Frame 2- Another installment in the best survival horror title since the original Silent Hill? No, difficulty ramped way down for retards, ghosts no longer scary.

la pucelle tactics- Sequel to kickass Disgaea? No, Penney Arcade splooge approved.

devil may cry 2- Sequel to landmark action title? No, blurry 3D attempt at Contra with the shittiest autotargetting ever.

metal gear solid 2- Sequel to groundbreaking action/adventure game? No, the start of Hideo Kojima joining George Lucas in the realm of unchecked madness.

Front Missions 4- Scores of fanboys counting down the hours till release (Penney Arcade included). I swear the sole reason this series has such a cult following is because the first two were never released in America, which to Japophiles means it was too good for dirty American eyes and had to be kept on the sacred ground of Japan.

-Great titles that came out of nowhere:

Disgaea- Obscure game that they didn't expect to sell. Demand so high that copies became scarce and a re-issue had to be ordered.

The Suffering- A couple vague magazine ads were all that announced the arrival of the best horror game since the original Fatal Frame. Pussy reviewers bash it because it contains naughty language (I bet anything Qt3 hates it).

Zone of Enders: The Second Runner- The original ZoE has gone down in history as "that game people bought/rented for the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo". Joke's on them.

Psi Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy- While boring soldier wannabe faggots are busy pretending to be tough in Full Spectrum Warrior and Socom, I am telekinetically pushing people into incinerators and flinging their dead, flaming body at their buddies before sucking out their brain power, causing their heads to explode like Michael Ironsides.

Thing is though, the exact opposite seems true for PC games.

- C&C Generals: OMG the next C&C! The best RTS since Starcraft.

-Battlefield Nam: Why are people still playing Counter Strike?

-Silent Storm: Never heard a thing about this and probably would have missed it if not for the review here thanks to the completely generic cover burying it under the glut of WWII games. Sorry, but I just couldn't have fun with this one. I restarted so I could play without the "extra head wound damage" which renders you blind 80% of the time, but I just couldn't make it passed the shittiness of that first allied mission. It's still installed, but every time I think about giving it another shot I remember that I'm still on that first mission.

-Kohan: Budget title out of nowhere that should have died a deserving death. Insane reviewers decide to save it and raise it as their own.

Off the top of my head, I really can't think of the last really good low profile PC game or high profile console game.

AM I JUST CRAZY?
