Pick up a Dual Shock. Place your thumb on either the joypad or the analog stick, it doesn't matter. Move your thumb left, then right. Now, move your thumb UP. Notice how it lifts completely off the controller? Try that while playing a game. NOTHING HAPPENS.
During the 2D era, "climb ladder" was almost exclusively mapped to FORWARD on a joypad. I guess this lead gamers to forget which fucking direction they were actually pushing. The only ones who recognized this discrepancy were flight simmers, who were likely to have also known the experience of pushing a joystick FORWARD to tilt their plane's nose DOWN.
So the next time someone tries to tell you it makes more sense to map "look up" in a 3D game to "up" on your analog stick, you can tell them to choke on a cock. |
