The Roman Republic? Yes.

The word "Republic" makes it all better? All of Caesar's big campaigns happened in the Republic era, and the conquest of Greece (where Archimedes was killed by a soldier) happened in that period too. Remember Carthage? The Republic was fairly brutal dealing with those guys, I recall.
But to answer Jerry's question: Rome might be considered a bit barbaric by modern standards, and corruption was a major problem, but there simply wasn't any analog for the Nazis. Certainly, Rome didn't have the capability to carry out genocide on the level the Nazis did, nor did they have any desire to do that. The motive to kill any large segment of your agricultural workforce disappears when you realize the razor thin profit margins a pre-industrial government operates at. Also, the international situation was a bit more primitive back then, so conquering the gauls wasn't seen as a problem, and even the gauls accepted it after awhile and bought into Roman society 100%. And the Jews, by the way, at least ostensibly enjoyed religious freedom. It was their (and later, the Christians') pernicious "our God is the ONLY GOD" doctrine that created big problems. At least, it took two to do that particular tango, as far as I can tell. But then Christianity won that argument and converted the Empire, so whatever. |
