inFAMOUS/Prototype double review outline
At the risk of going all icycalm: is this what people want from their games nowadays? Don't get me wrong, neither game is bad per se, but neither are they compelling. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I demand more from what are supposed to be AAA games.
Both games give you powers in an open world, both games have absolutely no new ideas to bring to the open-world sandbox genre, both games INSIST that you play them in their pre-approved, pret-a-porter styles.
Bad design decisions: Prototype thinks artificial difficulty makes a game fun, inFAMOUS thinks cramming stealth and escort missions into the game constitutes variety.
Tangent on the same old artificial difficulty tropes being hauled out yet again with absolutely nothing new added, the persistence of the fallacy that a game has to be hard to be fun, the inability of designers to recognize the difference between challenge and difficulty, the introduction of the grind to action games, cheap tricks and how they lessen the enjoyment of a game.
Prototype spent money on its VA and it shows. They also cheaped out on modelling, and that shows as well.
A trillion cutscenes. Let Prototype show you them.
inFAMOUS has the most not-caringest story in the history of video games. I care more about the plot to Bezerk than I give a flying fuck about stupid bitch Trish and slack jawed yokel Zeke.
Technically competent? Yes. Inspired in any way? No.
