Re: FWIW I feel much the same way about DDR

Here's a little tidbit about Fabio's gaming tastes: While playing Thief 2, he discovered that the guards' swordfighting AI really wasn't that great. Whereupon he abandoned all pretense of stealth and ran through the levels slaughtering everything in his path and declared the game boring. If you find yourself nodding and saying, "Yes, that is what I would have done," then you probably won't like shmups and should immerse yourself in the world of competitive multiplayer strategy games. If, instead, you think, "What is he, stupid? That's not the point!" then you see where I was coming from when writing that draft. Secretly, Fabio and I both want the same thing. He wants depth and balance in his strategy games, I want depth and balance in my action games, and our common ground is brawler games.
Actually our common ground is Devil May Cry. Let's go back to that! The most optimal strategy in DMC is probably just abusing Royal Guard, but holy shit is that boring and slow. The gameplay rewards you for using swordmaster or gunslinger out of plain old fun. Thief 2's levels were so boring that I gave up and just ran through as quickly as possible. Two levels in a row were nothing but the world's most improbably crate warehouses. The first game kept things interesting with atmosphere like the citadel, or gameplay that wasn't broken (it was impossible to fight sword enemies and fly spitters at the same time so you were forced to sneak). How long did you last in System Shock 2 before the respawning enemies and breakable weapons made you want to just get it over with? Continuing is great in a shooter because you don't have to replay the easy tedious parts anymore. My New Years resolution was to beat Stage 12 in Warning Forever but slogging through the first 8 became too much of a boring investment, like an RPG with unskippable cutscenes before the boss fight you've died a dozen times on.
