Die Hard for the NES
I had never heard of it until I watched the AVGN video for it. Don't watch that if you don't like the AVGN or have an extraordinary interest in NES games--it's just him giving a good game crap for not being Mario or Mega Man. He is a terrible reviewer of games that are very different from Mega Man. The game is strangely dynamic. It's a top-down action game, and there are lines of sight--rooms you can't see are black. It's strange to see this on an NES. The programmers seem to have faked it some, but still, it's cool to see. And the story has a timed script that's driven by the progress of the terrorists, who you listen to over the radio, but it lets you go wherever you like and discover for yourself all the subgoals that you can achieve. There aren't any explicit stages, and the story never gets in the way of the game--it's just you playing through the movie while people occasionally, briefly talk within earshot of you, kinda like in Half-Life. You can pick up any kind of weapon you see enemies using and use it yourself in the same way they've appeared to do (except without their infinite ammo). I like this kind of game, where the world is consistent and open and full of things that do things--yet there's also a clear enemy or conflict that always drives you to do more than just mess around, despite that it never arbitrarily curtails your freedom. Die Hard isn't a great example of that or anything (Fallout is the best one I can think of off the top of my head), but stands out among NES games for seriously trying it at all.
