Re: Die Hard for the NES

I had never heard of it until I watched the AVGN video for it. Don't watch that if you don't like the AVGN or have an extraordinary interest in NES games--it's just him giving a good game crap for not being Mario or Mega Man. He is a terrible reviewer of games that are very different from Mega Man.
The AVGN somehow doesnt bug me when he is going out of his way to curse loudly. The rest of his imitators do. They sound so shrill, I want to punch them in the face. The Angry Video Game Nerd works because he isn't a nerd in reality. You have made me consider his body of work, however. I never picked up on the MegaMan thing before.
Maybe I was exaggerating--it looks like most of the games he's reviewed really were trying to be the kind of easy-to-get-into action game that he seems to favor. I was mostly thinking of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, which has an unusual design that he didn't even bother to understand, and Fester's Quest, which he seemed to dislike just because it was hard. (I tried that one because his review made it look like it might actually be good. It turned out the real problem was repetitiveness, not difficulty.) I think what got me thinking he wants everything to be Mega Man is that, whenever he doesn't have time to properly address (or even understand, sometimes) what a game is really trying to do, he falls back on the tactic of pointing out small ways in which it fails to do what somebody used to straightforward action games would expect it to do. And he's good at reviewing little things like that, but it seems like his goal is just to assemble a full video's worth of those, rather than genuinely reviewing the game. He seems to put entertainment before criticism. I have the impression that Yahtzee does a much better job of seriously reviewing while still being funny. But then, it's also much harder to verify what Yahtzee says, because Yahtzee reviews big timesink games that cannot be found in 125-kB ROM form.
