Re: 20 minute playthrough of XCOM
Anyways, it's obvious the developers just want to cash in on both the XCOM fans and the mainstream craving for dumb FPS games in one fell swoop. If they're actually hoping to make a worthy addition to the franchise, they've got their heads up their asses. The reason the original XCOM got so many fans wasn't because of some stunningly original or fascinating plot. The game was just fairly well made, had some inspired artwork and sound, and the theme fit perfectly into the early/mid-90's craze for everything UFO-related. All of the sequels, including the unofficial UFO ones, and this, tried to fix what wasn't broken, only a couple of them ending up fairly playable (Apocalypse and Aftermath, IMO). As big an XCOM fan I am myself, I don't really want another game in the franchise. It's been done to death, people don't really care about UFOs anymore, let's move on already. What I would like, though, are more turn based tacticals with with light base building, tech researching, daytrading, pot farming, porn video shooting and editing, WHATEVER, as distractions between missions. The theme is not so important. The Silent Storm games got it right, just needed more stuff between missions. I can also recommend Incubation from the Battle Isle series; basically a Space Hulk ripoff, the 1997 3D graphics are hideous (the "cutscenes" using the in-game engine will make you flinch back from the screen as if slapped in the face), but the gameplay is surprisingly balanced and fun, challenging but not frustrating. It's included in the Battle Isle pack on GOG for 10 bucks, I say it's worth it.
