Which is more significant, music or lyrics?
I can remember a few times when the music of a song affected me much more strongly than the words. Most of the time when I listen to a song, it's the words and the ideas expressed that I think of rather than the music. But it doesn't make the music irrelevant, though. Probably the one song I most remember striking me by sound alone was the opening of Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere. There is like a trilling effect of a tone, that when I first heard it, I thought it was possibly the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard, it struck me that hard. And this was before I even heard the lyrics. Will I let it Show me my soul? Tell me of that place Where I must surely go?
