Which is more significant, music or lyrics?by Tansin A. Darcos (TDARCOS) 10/09/2011, 4:33am PDT
I can remember a few times when the music of a song affected me much more strongly than the words.
Most of the time when I listen to a song, it's the words and the ideas expressed that I think of rather than the music. But it doesn't make the music irrelevant, though.
Probably the one song I most remember striking me by sound alone was the opening of Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere. There is like a trilling effect of a tone, that when I first heard it, I thought it was possibly the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard, it struck me that hard. And this was before I even heard the lyrics.
One of the first CDs that I heard on the radio that was strong enough to make me willing to buy it, was Martin Page's In the House of Stone and Light, and it was probably the words that affected me the most.
Will I let it
Show me my soul?
Tell me of that place
Where I must surely go?
