Go download a copy of Doom and check it out again. There are more areas of absolute pitch darkness in the opening level of Doom3 than there were in all of Doom and Doom2 combined. Those games were dim, but not so dark as to render you blind. For example, early in Doom3, I was attacked by some pistol-toting zombie in a pitch black area. I literally could not see him until he fired and was unable to target him, since he moved around after each shot. I had to just shoot blindly into the darkness and hope he died before I did. This is not good gameplay. Oh yeah, I couldn't retreat further into a lighted area because the doors mysteriously locked behind me. Super! I'll struggle through this monstrosity because I bought it and it cost money. But here's hoping Quake 4 is released this year.[/quote]
