Terraria drove me off after Gozu
I feel like a lot of the core combat problems revolve around the katana becoming insanely strong within the first 3 levels if you choose to throw all your skill points into it, which seems to be a common thing. If they had made it so you gain magical katana attacks when you beat a boss and find new magical sword parts, they could have controlled the player's power curve. Then they also could've made Zelda bosses, where you expose some vulnerability with your guns and magic and then bring it down with the katana. Having money AND skill points AND ki crystals also gave you too much power too early since there's never really anything to choose between, while something like Hard Reset, where there's just 1 currency and you have to choose between bullets/electrical/defense, had a better feeling of getting stronger without becoming overpowered (MAYBE the rail gun, but that ate up ammo fast enough to make it situational). I don't mind upgrades in action games, but only if it's something other than basic functionality. ANOTHER reason I disliked Bioshock Infinite was that without upgrading your weapons, they'd become completely useless by mid game, so for all the variety of weapons you were really stuck with 3 or 4.
