Re: Wait, he was complaining about DEPICTIONS of racism?
Yeah, his question to the Bioware guy was:
Right now sexism gets the most vocal focus in the gaming industry, but that’s far from the only issue. Racism and homophobia are still without a doubt major problems that we need to tackle as well. What, in your opinion, is the next step there?
And
There is a vocal crowd in the gaming community that despises the idea of diversity in games, though. Or at least, they hate how much attention the conversation gets relative to how under-the-radar it used to be
He also made the title of the article specifically include the word "racism." I don't know what to think. Maybe he really is just talking about online chat in games and comments on forums. It doesn't seem like it to me. It seems like he is equating the lack of diversity in picking your protagonist in some games to be because the developers hate black people. I don't think that's the case. Deus Ex 3 was made in Montreal. Blacks make up, what, 3 or 4% of all Canadians? Tomb Raider was made in England. And it is weird to me that video games made in Japan feature caucasian protagonists. Mario, Link, Leon and the ball from Katamari Damacy should all be ASIAN. But I guess it is like how in America we give everyone English accents in fantasy movies. So yeah if you take two of the largest versions of humans and make one look like the other in games it's gonna add up. Now you can say that Deus Ex 3 took place in Detroit and that should matter more than where it was developed. But it is human nature to develop towards what is around you. I just have a hard time calling that RACISM. The only white people I can think of in Detroit are Justin Verlander, Doug Fister and Adam Jensen, and they shipped Fister out of town . But I could be wrong, what the fuck do I know, I get a chance to play video games for three hours a week. These guys live and breathe it. And at this point it seems like I am ignoring his points on sexism and I am not, I agree with him there for the most part so I didnt comment on them It does sort of astound me that he says they are "problems we need to tackle" as if they can be solved in games while existing in every other facet of life. Like people are going to say "I hate women and minorities and gay people but not in games! They are ok there! Love em in tower defense" Perhaps just talking about it does help and it raises awareness. And maybe I am kind of the wrong person to talk about this because in Elder Scroll games I actually AM racist. I kill every non-human I see. I have never played as anything other than Breton and I will murder as many non-humans as I can. I dont get very far in the plots. I guess I didn't do it in Arena, just the later ones. So I gave their society a chance. I am a product of their society. Help me
